Estradiol is the most potent naturally occurring estrogen. Estrogens are the female hormones produced by the ovaries, adrenal cortex, placenta, and testes. Estrogens prepare the uterus for implantation of the fertilized ovum and promote the maturation of and maintenance of female secondary sex characteristics and reproductive organs.
